Several hundred years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the prophet Isaiah wrote many things concerning Jesus, His sufferings, His death, and His church. God inspired him to write the beautiful pictures of a suffering Messiah and the change that He would bring into the world. One such change is recorded in the second chapter of this grand book. The first four verses tell of an exciting time. In fact, they describe a time when the world would be changed forever.
"The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore." Isaiah 2:1-4What a grand and glorious picture! A day was coming in which the mountain of the Lord’s house would be established. It would be a day when peace would reign among those who go to that house. It would be a day when those in that house would forsake war. Swords would no longer cut down men but rather be changed to till the ground. Spears would no longer trim down an army but be made to trim down a plant for better growth. Oh, what a day indeed.
Interestingly, Isaiah is not the only prophet to record this prophetic event. The prophet Micah (4:1-3) also recorded it and it is nearly word for word. This suggests that Heaven did not want men to miss the coming of this day. This repetition puts the spotlight on it and gives it significance.
The immediate question now arises. When would this day come to pass? Has it already happened? Is it still in the future? What does the bible have to say on this subject? In order to answer these questions, we need to determine what exactly Isaiah and Micah saw and then determine if we can find the prophecy fulfilled in the Bible. Let us begin by examining the things these prophets saw.
